This past weekend, I directed my first “cycle” film at Chapman (so called because they are shot in turns, or cycles, over the course of the semester). This is the 8-page script I’ve talked about in previous entries. Thanks in large part to my absolutely amazing producer, Sunny Xiang, we had most of our hiccups […]
It’s hard to believe that we’re already 6 weeks into the spring semester. We really hit the ground running, and although I recorded this episode back in week 2, I’d been too busy to finish it until now. As I write this, we’ve already gone through our first production cycle, where 6 of the 18 […]
Interterm is over and the spring semester is about to begin. My focus over the past few weeks has been preparing for the single film production that will dominate the spring semester, an 8-page script shot over 3 days.
Unfortunately, I’ve been really bad about keeping up with my Film School Diaries videos. The semester has been so busy that I hardly noticed that we had already reached the end. In this video, I reflect a bit on my first semester of grad school and look ahead to Spring 2018.
The first semester of the graduate film program culminates in a project known as “3-2-1,” due to the parameters of the assignment: 3 page scripts with 2 characters and taking place in 1 location. It’s the first project in which we collaborate in our disciplines. Directors direct, Cinematographers shoot, Editors edit, and Sound Designers do […]
This short film is my “1-2-1” project from my Production Workshop class at Chapman University. “1-2-1” stands for 1 page, 2 characters, 1 location, and the goal of the project was to create a scene that reveals something about the characters’ relationship. This is the first time I’ve worked with actual actors on a project […]
It seems like all I had to do was blink and find myself halfway through the semester. We really did hit the ground running, and I just realized that I never got around to doing a video describing the classes that I’m actually taking this semester. So here it is. Since we’re so far along, […]
It’s been a busy first month back in film school. I’ve written six short scripts, acted in two scenes and two film exercises, made two exercise films of my own, and am now preparing a third exercise, seventh script, and a scene for directing class. What I want to do in this Film School Diary […]
I always knew that grad school would be busy, but now that I’ve had the first meetings of all my classes, and seen all the syllabi, I can quantify just how busy I’m going to be. The answer is very. I have no class on Thursday or Friday but it’s clear now that I’m going […]
This week was orientation for Dodge College at Chapman University, and it was packed. I did have some time off on Tuesday and Thursday, but the week was otherwise filled with meetings, screenings, workshops, and social events that often stretched into the night. I started, as I tend to, with a fair amount of apprehension, […]
In this entry, I reflect back on one of my earliest student films and examine how dealing with catastrophic problems while still having to produce acceptable work, trained me to be more flexible and be able to come up with creative solutions (or sometimes, just accept the flaws that can’t be corrected).
This week I spent two days in Orange County, CA in the hopes of securing a place to live for at least the first year of my studies. I’ve been researching apartments in the area for several weeks, and had compiled a shortlist of about 20 places that I thought were worth looking at. Just […]
In this entry of Film School Diaries, I talk about how I went from making the decision to apply for grad school, to submitting a successful application, within the space of only a few months (which I do not recommend attempting). I also discuss which schools I applied to, how I decided, and what attracted […]
In this episode, I discuss why I decided to leave a decent-paying stable job and go back to being a starving student.
I’m excited to announce my new project, Film School Diaries. In August of 2017, I will begin studies in a top rated MFA film production program (stay tuned to find out which), and I invite you to follow along with me. I’ll be chronicling my experience through videos, blog posts, photos, and in-the-moment thoughts on […]
